Mississippi Teacher Could Get Death Penalty

A 28-year-old middle school teacher in Mississippi could be put to death for killing her lover’s pregnant fiancé three years ago, CNN reports.

A jury of nine women and three men found Carla Hughes guilty of two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Avis Banks and her unborn child, CNN reports. They also found that the shooting and stabbing took place during a burglary, which made her eligible for the death penalty. They must now decide whether she should be executed or spend life behind bars.

According to Madison County prosecutors, Hughes killed Banks so she could be with Keyon Pittman, her lover and colleague at Chastain Middle School in Jackson, Miss.

Police found Banks, 27, lying in a pool of blood in the garage of the home she shared with Pittman, the father of her unborn child. She had been shot four times in the leg, chest and head, and then stabbed multiple times in the face and neck as she lay dying, according to medical testimony, CNN reports.
