Frozen isn't just how people around the country were feeling this weekend as December cold fronts set in, it's the name of this week's box office victor. The animated family film finally knocked Hunger Games: Catching Fire out of its perch with a $31.6 million take. Not that Hunger Games is suffering: the blockbuster film earned another $27 million over the weekend, making its worldwide total to $673.4 million.
Out of the Furnace, the thriller starring Christian Bale, Forest Whitaker and Zoe Saldana, failed to heat up. The film earned just $5.3 million in wide release, making it the worst opening of Bale's career and the biggest bomb of Whitaker's otherwise stellar year.
Meanwhile, at the art house box office, both Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and 12 Years a Slave continued to post stellar numbers. Mandela, still in limited release, earned the second best per-screen average of the weekend on news of Nelson Mandela's death. 12 Years a Slave, meanwhile, crossed $32 million in ticket sales and became the best-performing art house film of the year.
