Doechii Links Up With SZA for Surprise Single ‘girl, get up.’
Who said what about Doechii?!
The Swamp Princess has a message for everyone and anyone who labeled her an “industry plant.” Her new surprise single, “girl, get up.” featuring TDE labelmate SZA and produced by Jay Versace, has Doechii dropping bars to shut all that noise down and to push back on other rumors swirling around her rapid rise this year. Doechii posted a clip to her Instagram and captioned it, “life update.”
In the song, Doechii declares:
"All that industry plant shit wack / I see it on the blogs, I see you in the chats / 'You suck every rap n***a dick from the back' / But what’s the agenda when the It girl Black?"
"Y'all can't fathom that I work this hard/ And y'all can't fathom that I earned this chart/ Y'all can't stand my vibe 'cause I'm anointed/ All y'all evil-ass hoes just annoying."
The track leans on a spare, punchy groove built from a drum sample lifted from the Neptunes-produced beat on Birdman and Clipse’s “What Happened to That Boy?” This nod gives the song a smoky, late-night feel as Doechii delivers the blunt, defiant verses she’s become known and loved for, and SZA supplies a sultry and straight-up affirming hook.
Doechii also released a visual for the song that pairs cinematic rooftop and yacht scenes with minimalist choreography that meshes with the song’s cool, confident tone. The Florida rapstress also teased her next chapter. According to a press release, this is the final song in Doechii's Swamp Sessions series.
While critics and fans debate the song’s tone, it’s clear that “girl, get up.” is a rebuttal and a manifesto. Doechii refuses to be defined by anyone else, especially her haters. And one thing is certain: everyone’s watching for what’s next, even her haters.
