Michelle Obama Says She and Barack Were Set to See Rob and Michele Reiner the Day They Died
Michelle Obama shared a deeply personal revelation Monday night, disclosing that she and former President Barack Obama were scheduled to see filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, on the same day the couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home.
Speaking during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” the activist shared that the news was especially devastating because of their plans that evening.
“We were supposed to be seeing them that night — last night,” she said, noting that the couple had been part of their lives for years.
While she did not specify what the gathering would have entailed, the weight of the timing was unmistakable.
The former first lady used the moment not only to acknowledge the shock of the loss, but also to speak directly to who the Reiners were as people.
“We’ve known them for many years,” she said, before adding that they were among “the most decent, courageous people you’d ever want to know.”
She also pushed back against any attempts to reduce or mischaracterize them amid the tragedy.
“They are not deranged,” she said, emphasizing that what defined the couple was passion, conviction, and a deep concern for others.
“They cared about their people and this country. They care about fairness and equity. That is the truth. I do know them.”
The Reiners were found dead Sunday afternoon at their Brentwood home, according to NBC News. The source said the couple appeared to have died from stab wounds, though authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of death.
On Tuesday, the LA Times reported that the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, had been arrested on suspicion of murdering his parents.
Los Angeles police said they responded to a report of two deceased individuals at the residence but did not immediately identify the victims. Officials described the case as an active death investigation.
The street surrounding the property was later blocked off with caution tape as officers remained on scene into the evening.
A medical examiner’s van was seen at the home, and plainclothes officers continued working through the early hours of Monday.
