'The Gates' Traps Three Black College Friends in a Deadly Gated Community
On March 13, 2026, moviegoers are set to experience a thriller like no other. The Gates follows Derek, Kevin, and Tyon, played by Mason Gooding, Algee Smith, and Keith Powers. After taking a shortcut through a secluded gated community, the trio witnesses a murder and soon find themselves trapped inside the neighborhood. As tensions rise, they are accused of the crime and pursued by residents, while internal disagreements strain their friendship over the course of the night.
Gooding is known for roles in the recent Scream franchise installments and the series Love, Victor. Smith previously portrayed Ralph Tresvant in The New Edition Story and appeared in Judas and the Black Messiah. Powers gained recognition for his role in Straight Outta Compton and has since appeared in projects including The Tomorrow War.
James Van Der Beek co-stars as the community’s patriarch, a central figure who exerts influence over the neighborhood as suspicion falls on the three students. The film presents a contained thriller setting, with much of the action unfolding within the walls of the gated enclave.
