Gilbert Arenas Says Cybertruck Malfunction Caused His Son’s Car Accident

The former NBA All-Star said that a steering wheel problem caused his son to crash his Tesla Cybertruck.

Gilbert Arenas said his son is "lucky" to be alive after being involved in a car accident that left him trapped in a burning Tesla Cybertruck in April.

The former NBA All-Star revealed that Alijah Arenas, a McDonald's high school All-American and USC commit, experienced a steering wheel malfunction that caused him to crash the vehicle into a fire hydrant and a tree.

Appearing on "All the Smoke," Arenas shared the details of the horrific accident and how the Cybertruck was the cause of the car crash.

“The car malfunctioned on him,” Arenas told Matt Barnes, co-host of the show. “The steering wheel went limp and ran him right into a tree.”

“He's on the phone with 9-1-1 – I'm trying to get that call – he's on the phone with them for 10 minutes, so I know he was at least in the car for 10 minutes," Arenas continued. "If you are a parent and your teen has this car, you might want to put a hammer in that joint, something that can break the window. Because physically, he said he was trying to kick the window in and couldn't."

Bystanders who witnessed the accident pulled Alijah from the vehicle, and he was taken to the local hospital. Because he inhaled so much smoke, Alijah was put into an induced coma overnight and did not suffer any major injury.

“The Govan and Arenas family are preparing for the road ahead with faith and determination, committed to nurturing Alijah back to 100%. He remains blessed, resilient, and in high spirits,” read the family’s statement at the time of the accident.

Eventually, Alijah recovered and was released from the hospital a week later.

"When he got home, we had flowers for him. And I gave him that speech. 'You're a lucky one to see this,” Arenas recalled. “Most people don't get to see the flowers and how everyone reacts when something happens.”

“You get to witness what the world did when you were in an induced coma,” he continued. “You can’t take this s**t for granted.”
