Tory Lanez Appeals Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Conviction, Citing DNA Evidence Issues
Tory Lanez is still fighting for his freedom, even as he serves a ten-year sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. The rapper is still pushing for his convictions to be overturned.
At a hearing on August 18, his attorney, Crystal Morgan, stood before a panel of judges and doubled down on her client’s innocence. She claimed Lanez didn’t get a fair trial and argued that key DNA evidence was misinterpreted. According to her, the prosecution failed to present the findings in a way that would have shown reasonable doubt.
“It is actually marginally more likely that another member of the African American population touched this gun over Mr. Peterson,” Morgan said, per Billboard. “If our jury had heard that Mr. Peterson maybe one in a million touched the gun, I believe that would have been enough to tip those scales and show reasonable doubt.”
This hearing comes just days after a California appeals court rejected two petitions from Lanez’s legal team. In those filings, his lawyers argued that his due process rights had been violated and that crucial evidence was withheld from the defense. They alleged this included the firearm used in the shooting and the bullet fragments taken from Megan’s foot.
Prosecutors, however, dismissed those claims. They said the gun remains in LAPD custody and that retesting it would not change anything. In their response, prosecutors noted that both sides’ experts at trial agreed Lanez’s DNA wasn’t found on the magazine. When it came to the weapon itself, the court explained that the findings were inconclusive, meaning they couldn’t confirm or rule him out as a minor contributor.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was sentenced in 2023. His earliest shot at parole will come in November 2029. If he’s denied, he won’t be released until 2033. Until then, he and his team are making it clear they plan on doing whatever they can to bring him home.
