Universal Is Afraid Someone Will Get Shot Watching Straight Outta Compton

Studio providing extra security in some locations.

While box office analysts are preoccupied with how much money Straight Outta Compton will rake in this weekend, some theater owners have something else on their mind: will a film about the birth of gangster rap lead to gang violence at the multiplexes?
Just in case, Universal — the studio that is releasing the acclaimed NWA biopic — has partnered with some theaters to provide extra security. Careful to stipulate that the studio "has not solicited enhanced security for theaters who will begin showing it this weekend," Universal nonetheless "has partnered with those exhibitors who have requested support for their locations." According to the Hollywood Reporter, "partnered" means the studio is helping to pay for extra security.
To be fair, two previous movies — Boyz N the Hood and Notorious — with gang themes have lead to "several incidents of violence" at various theaters on opening weekend, but the bloodiest instances of violence in movie theaters occurred during screenings of The Dark Night and Trainwreck
Universal did not disclose which of the 2,700 theaters where Straight Outta Compton is opening this weekend it is working with.
