Aaliyah’s Family Is In Talks To Get Her Catalog On Streaming Platforms
As fans, close friends, and other artists took to social media to remember Aaliyah on the 19th anniversary of her tragic death, the R&B singer’s family shared some major news.
The hashtag #Aaliyah trended on Twitter on Tuesday (Aug. 25) as fans shared their favorite songs, memories and anecdotes about Aaliyah. Missy Elliott penned her respects to her late friend’s legacy.
“Your music has always been 10 STEPS AHEAD & Your sound is still FUTURISTICExtraterrestrial alien,” the rapper and producer wrote. “Your fashion [has] always been ONE OF KIND. You rocked your outfits with SWAG & SAUCE!FireJust know that you are still inspiring generations ‘til this day. We love you.”
Amid the tributes, her family released a statement regarding the status of Aaliyah’s music.
Much of the late R&B singer’s music has been in limbo since she died in the 2001 plane crash in the Bahamas. Except for her acclaimed 1994 debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, and a handful of singles, most of her music is not legally available on streaming services, according to Variety.
Her subsequent albums, One In A Million and Aaliyah, have long been unavailable for streaming. However, it appears this may change soon.
“We are excited to announce that communication has commenced between the estate and various record labels about the status of the Aaliyah’s music catalogue, as well as its availability on streaming platforms in the near future. Thank you for your continued love and support,” the statement from her family reads.
This announcement comes after a private Twitter account seemingly belonging to Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson, former head of the now-defunct Blackground Records, tweeted out back in December that her full discography will be available on major streaming services on what would’ve been her 41st birthday, which was January 16.
Though her family’s statement did not delve into what the latest round of talks have entailed, they assured her longtime fans that there are “more updates to come.”
Nonetheless, fans were excited over the news.
