At Least 15 Killed In Soweto, South Africa Mass Shooting
At least 15 people have reportedly been killed in a shooting at a bar in the South African township of Soweto on Sunday (July 10).
According to CNN, local authorities say several people were also injured in the tragic incident that unfolded shortly after midnight, when a group of men armed with rifles and pistols entered the bar in the Nomzamo informal settlement near Johannesburg started shooting “randomly” at the patrons.
Gauteng Police said in a statement that 23 people were shot in the establishment with 12 dying at the scene and 11 rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries. At least two more were pronounced dead at the hospital, CNN reports.
The suspects are currently still on the run, according to police, who are asking witnesses of the shooting to come forward.
"It's a bad scene. When you see the bodies [that] are piled up, you can see that every one of those people [was] struggling to get out of the tavern," Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela told South African news channel ENCA.
Mawela added that authorities haven’t yet established a motive or why the people at the tavern were targeted.
"I have no doubt that with the cooperation of the community here, we will be able to crack this case," he said.
The shooting comes just days after 21 teens died at a South African nightclub from what authorities say was a result of a strong, suffocating smell that packed the two-story building. Foul play, in that case however, isn’t currently certain at this point.
