Brandy and Monica Reveal the Unexpected Inspiration Behind The Boy Is Mine

The R&B icons credit ‘The Jerry Springer Show’ for sparking the idea for their iconic duet.

Brandy and Monica’s record “The Boy Is Mine’ is a cult classic, and the veterans share the talk show that inspired the record.

During an appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,” the duo revealed to the host that “The Jerry Springer Show” was the inspiration behind the Grammy-award winning song.

“I was a huge Jerry Springer fan,’ said Brandy during the interview.

“One of the topics was ‘The boy is mine,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh my God. Song idea. Let’s do this.”

Monica expressed her early hesitations when approached to record the song back in 1998, assuming the public would think they were at odds.

“People are going to think we’re fighting…and people still think we’re fighting” she jokingly said to Fallon.

“I don’t know if it’s the greatness of the song or something else, but it did start something completely different. We’re a musical marriage”

Elsewhere in the interview, the ladies share positive sentiments on Ariana Grande calling them up asking to do a reimagined version of “The Boy Is Mine” with them both on the remix.

“I think it was how personable she was that made us feel so comfortable,” she began.

“We’ve been very adamant to just leave history as it is. The integrity of it was still there.”
