Herschel Walker Sticks To Right-Wing Views On Abortion: ‘There’s No Exception’
Georgia Senate candidate and former football star Herschel Walker indicated recently that he supports abortion bans without any exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the mother.
“There’s no exception in my mind,” Walker told reporters on Wednesday (May 18), according to The Hill. “Like I say, I believe in life. I believe in life.”
Additionally, Walker’s campaign told the news outlet that he is “pro-life and will not apologize for that.”
On Tuesday, Walker is expected to win Georgia’s Republican nomination for the Senate and will face off against Democratic incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock in November’s general election.
Walker’s comments come as Congressional Democrats have attempted to pass a bill that would codify Roe v. Wade, but it was blocked in the Senate by Republicans and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.).
Weeks ago, a draft was leaked showing that the U.S. Supreme Court may overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade case, which would remove the federal right of women to terminate their pregnancies. Congressional Democrats have since called for abortion rights laws to be codified, but have not met with any success.
If the case is overturned, laws surrounding abortion would largely be up to the states, several of which have instituted trigger laws which would ban the procedure, forcing women to seek it in states where it would remain legal.
