Meek Mill Says Bubblegum Rap Won’t Last as He Pushes for More Meaning in Hip-Hop
Meek Mill isn’t mincing words about what he wants from rap right now and lightweight records aren’t cutting it.
The Philly rapper hopped on X on Monday (Nov. 24) to draw a clear line between the kind of music he respects and the kind he refuses to press play on.
For the “Dreams and Nightmares” rapper, meaning matters to him. He hinted that flashy rollouts and big budgets can’t compete with records that actually resonate in real life.
As he put it, bubblegum rap simply “can’t work when that organic sh*t hits the streets,” adding that if a track doesn’t carry any real weight, he’s not interested, no matter how hard it’s pushed.
The MC isn’t afraid of sharing his opinion as he shared his thoughts this past summer on Shannon Sharpe being let go from ESPN after the former NFL star settled a $50 Million rape and sexual assault lawsuit involving his ex-girlfriend, according to a report from BET.com.
The “Check” rapper quote-tweeted “Ya’ll too old to be getting fired” after the announcement of the podcaster’s departure surfaced on social media.
Sharpe responded to his firing by saying he wished the announcement waited instead of overshadowing his brother, Sterling Sharpe’s, achievement as he was going into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame that weekend.
“I really wanted it to be about him and I wanted it to be about my family,” he said.
