Marlon Wayans Talks Possibility of Creating New Family Show: ‘We Just Love What We Do’
While the Wayans family is currently developing the sixth “Scary Movie,” the siblings could one day launch another variety show.
Former sketch comedy show, “In Living Color,” which the second-oldest Wayans sibling, Keenan Wayans, launched in 1990, ran for five seasons. Damon Wayans and his son, Damon Jr., star on the sitcom “Poppa’s House,” where Marlon Wayans has appeared as a guest star. In a new interview with “People,” Damon and Marlon were asked about the possibility of rebooting “In Living Color,” which both starred in.
“I don't know about that,” Marlon said. “We do want to do a show together, eventually, some type of variety show. I think it'd be fun."
“In Living Color” jump-started the careers of the Wayans family, including siblings Shawn and Kim Wayans, along with castmates David Alan Grier, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Tommy Davidson, and more, in addition to ‘Fly Girls’ dancers Jennifer Lopez and Rosie Perez.
In the interview, Damon discussed that “trust” and “chemistry” are critical to performing alongside his family, who were inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame last month.
“The thing that takes actors years to develop, we have that automatically, which is chemistry and trust,” Damon said. “And so when Marlon starts going a certain way, I just know — I have faith he knows where he's going, and if not, I can steer him back to planet Earth.”
The entertainers now see their impact on the up-and-coming generation of comedians, especially with the buzz of “Scary Movie 6.” Returning stars and co-writers are Marlon and Shawn, with Keenan Ivory Wayans also as a writer.
“We just love what we do,” Marlon told “People.” “And we were just blessed to be able to do it with each other. And it's great that that's made an impact because I remember watching great families like the DeBarges [...] and the Jacksons and how much that affected our household. And so we stand on the shoulders of giants. And now hopefully there's the next families that can stand on our shoulders as well.”
