Coco Gauff & Francis Tiafoe Advance To The French Open Quarterfinals

Both are looking to win their first championship at Roland Garros

Coco Gauff and Francis Tiafoe have both advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open.

On Monday (June 2), Gauff defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia, 6-0, 7-5 in 82 minutes. The 2023 US Open secured her fifth straight fourth-round appearance, and since her main-draw debut in 2020, Gauff has reached the last eight at Roland-Garros, including a run to her first Grand Slam final in 2022.

"I thought I played well, she's a tough opponent," Gauff told Sloane Stephens after the match.. "In the second set, she started blasting some winners; felt like I wasn't playing that bad, but that's her game."

Gauff then spoke of the possibility of playing Madison Keys or Hailey Baptiste in the next round.

"I know them both very well," said Gauff. "I think I've only played Hailey once, a few years ago at D.C. (Gauff won 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 16, in 2023). It's great to see her doing well at these major tournaments.

"Obviously Madi has been playing some great tennis, coming off a Grand Slam win. It's going to be a tough match either way."

After 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Daniel Altmaier of Germany on Sunday night (June 1), Tiafoe advances to the Men’s quarterfinal round.

Although he played on the red clay at Roland Garros, which is not his favorite, Tiafoe showed that he can excel on any surface.

"On clay, I get a little more passive than on other surfaces, because the court doesn't help me play as fast as I would like," Tiafoe said. Patience is a thing I struggle with."

"Overall, I'm a big believer it can all change in a week. When I'm backed up against it, it seems like I start to produce my best tennis, because I have to if I want to continue living the life I want to live,” he added.

"If I'm ready to go, I'm not just going to get to the third round -- I can go for a run. I genuinely feel I can beat anybody on any specific day,” he continued.

Next for Tiafoe will be a matchup on Tuesday (June 3)  against No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti.
