Juicy J Says He Wants To Take On Dr. Dre In A ‘Verzuz’ Battle

Fans had a mixed reaction to the challenge.

Over the last few months of quarantine, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s Verzuz platform has brought the hip-hop and R&B community closer, with a number of its biggest names, including Ne-Yo, T-Pain, Teddy Riley, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmond, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Nelly, and Ludacris. Earlier this week, New York rap veterans Jadakiss and Fabolous went head-to-head in a virtual showdown for the latest installment of the Instagram-based series.

  • While the next rivals to face-off have not been announced yet, Three 6 Mafia’s Juicy J took the moment to jockey for a spot on the roster and put it out into the universe as to who he’d be willing to go up against.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday (June 30), the rapper tweeted “I wanna do a Verzus battle with Dr Dre no cappuccino.” He finished the tweet off with a blue baseball cap emoji.

  • Opinions were split down the aisle on the proposed match-up. While it’s highly unlikely Dre will ever make an appearance on Verzuz, most fans felt that a battle between Juicy J and Dre could be a sight to see. Though, the Memphis native’s comment was met with some reservation from fans who didn’t feel his catalogue stacked up to Dre’s body of work, prompting Juicy J to remind them of his own extensive catalogue and production work.

“I produced a lot of songs. Check my catalog. S**t’s long mane. I’m [grateful] to still do what I love to do,” he issued in a set of follow-up tweets. “Don’t forget I got a Oscar, a Moon Man, a Grammy, American music Awards & some mo’ s**t. I’m a heavy weight too. Some of y’all never knew that [though it’s] all good. I’ll show you.”

The “Dark Horse” rapper proceeded to list off some recent tracks that he’s produced for other artists, including Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer,” Young Dolph’s “RNB” with Megan, and August Alsina’s “Resent,” which he features on alongside Lil Wayne

  • Fans have been begging for Dr. Dre to be brought onto Verzuz. Swizz Beats and Timbaland flirted around with the idea of a possible “pay-per-view” showdown between the West Coast icon and music impresario Diddy back in April while talking over Instagram Live. The Compton hip-hop legend later revealed to Teddy Riley that he and the Bad Boy Records mogul were in talks, although there hasn't been any further word on that.
