Ryan Coogler's ‘Sinners’ Breaks Oscar Nominations Record With 16
Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending epic "Sinners" made Academy Awards history on Tuesday morning, earning a record-breaking 16 nominations to lead the 2026 Oscars and cementing its place as the most nominated film in the ceremony’s history.
The nominations were announced January 22, with "Sinners" surpassing previous records held by "Titanic," "All About Eve," and "La La Land," each of which earned 14 nominations in their respective years. The Warner Bros. release scored across nearly every major category, including Best Picture, Best Director, multiple acting categories, screenplay, and a dominant showing in technical fields.
Directed by Coogler, "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role and blends horror, music, and Southern gothic storytelling to explore generational trauma, faith, and freedom in Jim Crow–era America. The film has been widely praised for its ambition, craft, and cultural impact, making its awards-season sweep one of the most closely watched runs in recent Oscar history.
Trailing closely behind "Sinners" is "One Battle After Another," directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which emerged as the second-most nominated film of the year. The satirical political drama earned nominations in Best Picture, acting categories, and several technical races, solidifying Anderson’s continued dominance with the Academy.
In the acting races, nominees include Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo for Sinners, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another. The performances signal a competitive year in the lead and supporting categories, with several first-time nominees joining Oscar veterans.
