Shirley Raines Cause of Death Has Been Revealed
Shirley Raines, the NAACP-award-winning activist and humanitarian powerhouse, was found unresponsive in her Henderson, Nev., home by her twin sister Sheila on Jan. 27.
Now, nearly a month later, her daughter Danielle Williams shares that the cause of her mother’s death was hypertensive heart disease.
A spokesperson for the Clark County Coroner's Office confirmed the cause of death with People magazine and said that the manner of death was natural.
Raines, also known as Ms. Shirley, was the force behind Beauty 2 The Streetz, which brought food, hygiene kits, makeovers, and hope to hundreds of unhoused men and women in LA's Skid Row every Saturday, rain or shine.
Over the years, her nonprofit's pages have racked up millions of followers, with viral clips showing Raines pulling up curbside in her car, with packages of food piled high, ready to deliver to those in need. Raines, who was open about her own struggles, wanted her presence and efforts to be a reminder to anyone living on the streets that they're seen, valued, and not defined by being unhoused.
Police were sent to Raine’s home for a wellness check after her family tried to reach her multiple times. No foul play was suspected. A police report obtained by People said that she was found unresponsive near her bed. Though it is not clear how long she was there.
News of her death spread quickly online, as countless fans mourned and shared how her life and organization were an inspiration. “She doesn’t even know how many people seen and admired her work. Rest in Power Queen,” wrote one fan.
“Ms. Shirley dedicated her life to serving others and made an immeasurable impact on homeless communities throughout Los Angeles and Nevada,” a statement said. “Through her tireless advocacy, deep compassion, and unwavering commitment, she used her powerful media platform to amplify the voices of those in need and to bring dignity, resources, and hope to some of the most underserved populations.”
