Former NFL Tight End Orson Charles Arrested For Allegedly Pulling Gun On Off-Duty Officers
Former NFL player Orson Charles has reportedly been charged with aggravated assault following a Friday night (July 15) incident in Tampa, Florida.
According to local Florida station WTSP, the longtime fullback and tight end, who last played for the Denver Broncos in 2019, allegedly approached two off-duty police officers in a dispute over a parking spot. The Tampa Police Department claims Charles threatened to shoot the officers with a gun he was carrying before being detained early Saturday.
WTSP reports that the incident began when Charles attempted to park but was beaten to a spot by another car. That’s when the 31-year-old Charles approached the driver’s side door of the other car, occupied by the off-duty officers, and retrieved a gun from under his shirt, threatening to shoot them.
The officers then allegedly revealed their badges to Charles, who continued to threaten them before the officers drove away. The former NFL player was taken into custody after an off-duty Hillsborough County deputy monitored Charles after the incident once he was alerted to what happened. Charles has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed firearm, WTSP reports. Both are felony offenses in the state of Florida.
Charles played in the NFL for eight seasons, mostly for the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. He then split time between six other teams from 2014 to 2019. He was a former fourth-round draft pick out of Georgia in 2012.
