Gladys Knight Tells Fans She’s Healthy and Happy Amid Son’s Allegations
Gladys Knight is setting the record straight after her son, Shanga Hankerson, claimed her husband, William Macdowell, has been mentally and financially abusive and pushed her to keep working despite health concerns.
The 81-year-old music legend is currently gearing up to return to The Queens Tour alongside Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, and Stephanie Mills. She told PEOPLE she’s enjoying the ride, not suffering from it. “I’m sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented,” Knight said. “I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right? I’m healthy and happy, and visiting friends and family these last few months. I’m excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with The Queens Tour. See you soon.”
Hankerson, however, has raised alarms about her well-being. He says her demanding schedule is “detrimental” and that in recent years she’s shown signs of memory decline. He pointed to a New Year’s Day incident where, according to him, she did not recognize him for 45 minutes. “Why is she working? Why is she in this situation where she’s being made to believe that she has to work like this?” he told PEOPLE.
Earlier this month, Hankerson filed a complaint with the Department of Human Services in Buncombe County, North Carolina, prompting an in-home assessment. He insists he’s acting out of concern, not financial motive. “This has nothing to do with money for me,” Hankerson said. “I’m trying to get her to stop working.”
Knight’s team has dismissed the allegations as “unfounded.” Her publicist, Laura Herlovich, said the singer hasn’t toured since June and is eager to get back on stage in September. The statement added that lawyers are reviewing possible legal action over Hankerson’s remarks.
For Knight, the focus is still music. With 11 shows scheduled through the end of the year, she’s preparing to share the stage again — determined to let her fans see for themselves that she’s exactly what she says she is: “healthy and happy.”
