Shyheim Franklin Sentenced to 14 Years for Hit-and-Run

Rapper will also serve time for a 2013 gun charge.

Wu-Tang Clan-affiliated rapper Shyheim Franklin was sentenced to up to 14 years in prison Thursday (Aug. 21), for a fatal hit-and-run accident on New Year's Day. He will be given at least four and two thirds of the 14-year sentence.

Prosecutors say Franklin, 36, was driving a friend's car on Staten Island, when he ran through a stop sign in the early morning hours of the holiday. He plowed into the vehicle of 29-year-old Felipe Avila Olea, who died.

He later angered the family by trying to raise money to cover his $500,000 bail.

Franklin pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in July, in addition to weapons possession stemming from an April 2013 incident. He will serve a seven year concurrent sentence for the weapons charge, in addition to five years' supervised release.

The native New Yorker has a rap sheet that includes a second-degree attempted robbery conviction, for which he served two years.

Franklin is most notably known under the rap moniker "Shyheim The Rugged Child."  He also has acting credits in television and film. is your #1 source for Black celebrity news, photos, exclusive videos and all the latest in the world of hip hop and R&B music.
