Look: Way More White Women and Latinos Voted for Trump Than Anyone Expected
One of the biggest surprises to come out of the election (besides the big reveal) was the breakdown of how targeted demographics voted.
Although Donald Trump has all but admitted to sexually assaulting women and called Mexicans rapists and drug dealers, he received a great deal of votes from both of those groups.
According to CNN exit polls, around 53 percent of white women voted for Trump on Tuesday.
White women turned out for Trump more than minority women. However, 26 percent of Latina women voted for Trump, CNN's exit polls revealed.
There’s no clear reason why women were not offended by his sexist comments or assault allegations. Many believe that his tough stance on immigration and divisive rhetoric was enough to blind female Trump voters from his misogyny.
Additionally, exit polls revealed that Trump gained much of his momentum from accruing votes from white men. He took 63 percent of white men, whereas Clinton only took 31 percent. Yet, no one is definitively saying Hillary’s gender affected the results because she lost with white women as well.
If there’s one thing these polls show, it’s that many people hid in the shadows when it came to pre-election polls. One correspondent on CNN called these people “leaners,” aka people who, when asked who they are voting for, lean in and shamefully whisper that they are actually voting for Trump.
