Black Scottish Creators Are Going Viral After Americans “Discover” Them on TikTok

TikTok users in the U.S. are just now realizing the Black diaspora stretches to Scotland. For creators like Torgi Squire, the sudden spotlight is long overdue.

Black Scottish creators are suddenly at the center of TikTok timelines — and it’s not their accents or dance challenges that are getting attention. It’s simply the fact that they exist, and Americans can’t get enough of them.

This week, U.S. users stumbled into a corner of the internet where the diaspora looks a little different from what was expected. For many, it’s been a surprise to see Black creators born and raised in Scotland, navigating life with Scottish slang, humor, and, yes, complaints about the weather. The fascination has turned into a viral moment that’s both entertaining and eye-opening.

One of the faces leading the charge is Torgi Squire, who posts under the handle @starboysobersfitness. Squire first went viral after a clip of him venting about Scotland’s gloomy weather caught fire. His sharp wit and uncanny resemblance to Emmy-winning actor Sterling K. Brown didn’t hurt either. Brown’s wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe, even jumped in on the fun, joking on Threads that her husband had been walking around the house all day speaking with a Scottish accent. “Send help and a kilt, please,” she wrote.

Since then, Squire has leaned into the moment, posting a TikTok that’s racked up nearly four million views. In it, he talks about the “crazy” amount of love he’s been getting from Americans and even answers some of the most common questions he’s been asked since going viral.

But it’s not just Squire. TikTok creator Erica Moura shared that her comments section has been flooded with U.S. users proclaiming, “We found you!” Her response was blunt: “Girl, I’ve been here, we’ve been here. We’ve actually been here for years, just no one recognizes us or our talents.”

That’s the heart of the conversation. While Americans are just now “discovering” Black Scottish creators, these voices have long existed — and TikTok is finally giving them the spotlight they deserve.
