Taraji P. Henson Always Wanted to ‘Do the Type of Work People Studied’

The Empire star on her long road to success.

What’s it like being TV’s most in-demand actress? We’re sure Taraji P. Henson can speak volumes about her road to stardom, and she’s opening up about her enduring journey in the November issue of Essence.

On the cover, she rocks her signature sleek bob with a sharp center part and shows off her incredible gams in an embellished black gown with thigh-high slits. Fans may remember that the Oscar and Emmy-nominated Henson first got her start on Sister Sister in 1997. Then came acclaimed film roles in Baby Boy, Hustle & Flow, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and presently, the ratings giant Empire

"Even though people are just now finding me as Cookie, thank God for Netflix because people are so moved by my performance they're like, ‘Where has she been?'" she told Essence in her cover story. "I've always said I want to do the type of work that people study."

Asked about her future, she continues, "I'm just gonna keep amassing an audience. Everything was strategically planned. This is what all my efforts are for."

And if you think she earned her acting chops overnight, she has this sobering message. "These kids are thinking they can do reality TV and come and do this craft that I studied, sweated and grinded. People forget it's a craft because it's so pop now... Can they make me believe the words coming out of their mouth?"
