As Ty Dolla $ign prepares to release his much-anticipated LP Free TC, which will drop next week, the Los Angeles rhyme-star recently rolled out the album’s lead single, “L.A.,” which pays homage to his City of Angels. Of course, Los Angelenos love the cut…. and for good reason. Here’s five of them.
The Melody
In his attempt to create new L.A. anthem, Ty included the key ingredient — infusing plenty of smooth R&B melody — in the groove of this cut. While he took his cue from iconic West Coast hip hop beat masters like Dr. Dre and DJ Quik, Ty worked in just enough Brandy to create a proper track for cruising on these sunny boulevards.
His G-funk Flow
In an indirect shout-out to Cali G-funk crooner Nate Dogg, Ty delivers this ode in a gangsta-fied sing-songy style that’s always been perfect for discussing the beauty and harsh reality of living in Los Angeles.
Hometown Love
Isn’t it obvious. Who doesn’t love a song celebrating their town.
Name Checking the Hood
No ode to a city would be complete without mentioning well-known spots and locations, which Tye does here, shouting out places like Watts and Compton as well as famous L.A. nightclubs like Greystone Manor and the Supper Club.
...And you can’t have a song paying homage to Los Angeles without including the city’s hottest homegrown music star, who lends his brand of Cali love and social commentary.
