ESPN Unsuccessfully Attempts To Find A Replacement For Jemele Hill
Wednesday’s (September 13) episode of SportsCenter went off without a hitch. Both co-hosts, Jemele Hill and Michael Smith were present as they dished on the latest in sports news, but if it was left up to ESPN, the night would’ve gone slightly different.
According to ThinkProgress.org, “ESPN originally tried to keep Hill off the air on Wednesday evening, but Smith refused to do the show without her.” The network’s decision to prevent Hill from going live came hours after the White House insisted that the veteran journalist be fired for her tweets calling Donald Trump a “white supremacist.”
SportsCenter producers reportedly approached Michael Eaves and Elle Duncan—two African-American ESPN hosts— with hopes that they’d be willing replace Hill and Smith but they both declined the network’s offer.
With two Black co-hosts refusing to appear on the program, ESPN was left with the option of using two white anchors and decided it would be their best bet to let the duo host the program.
While ESPN refutes claims that they tried to prevent Jemele Smith from appearing on SportsCenter, Black Twitter wasn’t buying it, and came out in her defense.
