Erykah Badu Named Face of Givenchy's Spring 2014 Campaign
Erykah Badu has been tapped to be the face of Givenchy's Spring 2014 campaign and we're excited to see the stylish singer model the fashion house's newest collection. In a recent interview with Style.com, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci talked about his decision to cast Ms. Badu for the role and his thoughts on the lack of diversity on the fashion runways.
"Erykah, she's an icon — come on!" Tisci said. "What I want to do with my advertising campaign is spread the love. Already now it's been three seasons that I've been using people that express something — they are great artists, or beautiful women, or stylish women, or models that I really believe in. It's kind of a family portfolio."
The campaign, which was shot by Mert & Marcus, features African and Japanese influences and Tisci said he had Badu on his mind when designing the collection. It's also important to note that all the female models featured in this campaign — including Maria Borges, Riley and Asia Chow — are women of color. When activist Bethann Hardison and Iman went after fashion houses who weren't giving Black models a chance, Tisci said he wasn't affected because he's been showing love to Black models for years.
"I discovered Joan Smalls, I discovered Maria [Borges]. I discovered a lot of Black girls, and I've been always supporting them. For me, I grew up in a family and I grew up in a culture, an education, that we all are the same."
