Kendrick Lamar Apologizes to Phil Jackson

K. Dot makes amends for his lyrical reference to the former NBA coach in Big Sean's "Control."

Kendrick Lamar's verse on Big Sean's "Control" ruffled a few feathers, and while the Top Dawg emcee remained unapologetic amid the criticism, he is now apologizing to one of his lyrical targets: the New York Knicks' president, Phil Jackson.

The rapper recently sat down with Vibe to reconfirm his respect for the former NBA coach. "I still gotta speak my peace to Phil," he said. "It's a beautiful thing, first of all. Second of all, I have to go back and say how big of a fan I was, and still am, of Phil... I don't want to be on Phil's bad side, so he's the only person I will apologize to about the line."

During his highly publicized verse on the 2013 hip hop hit, Lamar rapped, "Phil Jackson came back, still no coaching me. I'm uncoachable." His words were said in reference to Jackson coaching both the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jackson responded to K. Dot in August 2013 via Twitter, saying, "@kendricklamar it's okay to be cocky and sure, but we all need somebody to lean on. Let's just cal it mentoring."

Lamar is currently on media rounds with his new song "i," a first listen of his upcoming sophomore album. In addition to making amends, he also mentioned that he has a dream collaboration with Sade in mind. "I always wanted to work with Sade,” he said. "She has a very, very nice voice. Since day one. Anita Baker and Patti LaBelle, too."
