Disgusted Mom Posts Picture Of Watermelon With 'Happy 1/2 MLK' And 'Happy Black Day' On It Her Biracial Daughter Received From Co-Workers

Although the owner has apologized, many want legal action against the business to be taken.

A Michigan bar has received immense backlash after staff at the bar gave a biracial employee a racist gift of a watermelon for Martin Luther King Jr. Day with "Happy 1/2 MLK" and "Happy Black Day" written on it.

After the “gift” was given to the unidentified biracial employee, her mother, Kelly Martin Aimery of Mason, expressed her outrage through a post on Facebook, reported the Lansing State Journal.

By Wednesday, the post had been shared more than 660 times.

  • After receiving much criticism, Rob Hearit, owner and manager of Darb's Tavern, issued a statement of apology which referred to the victim as a 'wonderful minority employee'

"As owner and manager, I take full responsibility. I saw the 'gift' and I didn’t stop it. In fact, in a lapse of judgement, I also joined our employees in signing it. While I thought it was an innocent inside joke between employees who are friends, as the owner I should have recognized the inadvertent message, stepped in and stopped this behavior," Hearit wrote in the statement.

"I want to thank the members of the community who have called out these incredibly insensitive actions. They do not reflect the values of our staff or the owners. We are committed to using this incredibly huge mistake as an opportunity to learn and grow. That is why all current staff members at Darb’s, myself included, will be undergoing mandatory diversity and sensitivity training," he added.

  • Despite the public apology, residents familiar with the bar want the employee to take legal action
