4 Black Mayors Changing the Game in Their Cities

From young trailblazers to seasoned strategists, these leaders are rewriting the rules of civic engagement.

Across America, Black mayors are making history by tackling systemic challenges head-on and delivering measurable results. From plummeting homicide rates to innovative community programs, these leaders prove that bold policies and authentic representation can reshape our collective futures. Here are four mayors driving extraordinary change in 2025:

  • Brandon Johnson (Chicago, IL)

Since taking office in 2023, Mayor Johnson has defied expectations by reducing Chicago’s overall crime by 33%—a feat critics claimed was impossible for the nation’s third-largest city. His “People’s Plan” reinvests in mental health services, expands youth employment, and deploys violence interrupters rather than over-policing.

  • Brandon Scott (Baltimore, MD)

Mayor Scott’s laser focus on data-driven policing and community trust has yielded a staggering milestone: Baltimore recorded its fewest homicides ever in the first half of 2025. His “Group Violence Reduction Strategy” targets high-risk individuals with social services instead of blanket arrests.

Under Scott’s leadership, shootings were brought down by 22%. Homicide case closures also increased by 40% thanks to improved witness cooperation.

  • Randall Woodfin (Birmingham, AL)

The number of homicides in Birmingham for the first three months of 2025 is down nearly 50 percent over the same time period in 2024, a recent AL.com investigation reports.

The accomplishments don’t stop there. He also launched the Stop and Go Initiative, which eliminated parking and traffic tickets, to help low-income families get ahead.

He also rolled out the Through the Embrace Mothers Initiative, where 110 single moms received $375 a month for a year to offset childcare, food and general living expenses.

  • Chokwe Antar Lumumba (Jackson, MS)

Mayor Lumumba’s Jackson rising model prioritized water infrastructure repairs, offered universal pre-K and has reduced crime by 40% since 2022. His office also worked to clear the city’s rape kit backlog
