Twitter Lays Off Staff At Its Only Office In Africa

The Ghana location opened last year.

Last month, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk purchased Twitter for some $44B. Since then, the social media platform has been in a tailspin with skyrocketing hate speech, plunging stock prices, and advertisers pulling out. Now, Twitter has laid off its staff in Ghana, which was its only office in Africa.

According to the BBC, a Twitter email said they are ”re-organising its operations as a result of a need to reduce costs.” A letter from Twitter's management warned staff not to "contact or deal with any customers, clients, authorities, banks, suppliers or other employees of the Company and are required to inform the Company if contacted.”

Nearly 20 people were laid off, and their salaries will continue until the beginning of December. The employees in Africa were not offered three months of severance as were employees who were terminated in the U.S.

Twitter’s Ghana offices opened in April 2021.

As for the platform, there has been a mass exodus of people leaving, from Whoopi Goldberg to Shonda Rhimes. Additionally, Musk, who identifies as a "free speech absolutist,” reportedly wants to charge verified users to keep their verified status.
