Teyana Taylor Channels Angela Bassett in Fiery ‘SNL’ Promo

The musician-actor recreates the burning-car energy from ‘Waiting to Exhale’ in a new clip teasing her Jan. 24 hosting turn on ‘Saturday Night Live.’

Teyana Taylor is in her Angela Bassett bag…literally.

The Golden Globe-winning actress leaned into cinematic heat this week in a new “Saturday Night Live” promo that explicitly channels Bassett’s iconic “Waiting to Exhale” burning-car moment.

In the short clip released by SNL, Taylor is in conversation with cast member Ashley Padilla, who reveals that fellow cast member Andrew Desmukes had stolen her eggplant parm from the kitchen “by accident.” And Taylor couldn’t have that! She said, “We’re going to his dressing room. He’s gonna regret eating that parm — let’s go.”

Taylor — the show’s host for the Jan. 24 episode — transforms into a “Bernadine”-like figure of righteous anger, gathering a cast member’s belongings into a wagon and setting them ablaze in a cheeky, fierce riff on the original scene.

Taylor, as Bassett’s “Bernadine,” proceeds to destroy Desmukes things and lights them on fire while Padilla tries her best to keep up. (She can’t.)

“Is this about the parm?” Desmukes asked. Taylor (mimicking the movie) said, “Get your sh*t and get out!”

The promo positions Taylor not only as a musical and comedic force, but as an actor capable of dramatic parody. The spot is built for laughs as it inserts the moment into an “SNL” context where petty grievances become revenge, but it’s also an unmistakable nod to Bassett’s cultural touchstone performance from the 1995 film, a role that remains shorthand for Black women’s cinematic fury.

Taylor’s hosting night (with musical guest Geese) follows a growing tendency on “SNL” to recruit Black performers who bring both star power and a capacity for intricate character work. Taylor is joining an iconic list of Black women performers who have the chops to host the long-running sketch show, like Issa Rae, Queen Latifah, Keke Palmer, Gabourey Sidibe, Kerry Washington, Regina King, Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, and more.
