Melissa Samnath Went to Jamaica to Celebrate Her Birthday and She Never Made It Home
What was supposed to be a birthday getaway to Jamaica ended in tragedy for Melissa Kerry Samnath, a 35-year-old Queens, New York woman whose death is now being investigated as a homicide. Authorities say Samnath died from multiple blunt force head injuries after being dropped off at Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James on April 29, the day she turned 35.
According to People, Samnath had previously sent alarming messages to family members in New York, asking them to call police and share her location. Reports say she was found with visible injuries, and that her partner, Dane Watson, assisted her to the hospital before leaving the scene. Watson was later identified as a person of interest, and as of the latest reporting, he has been taken into custody but has not yet been charged.
The case has shaken both Samnath’s loved ones and people following the story across the Caribbean and the U.S. According to the New York Post, family members described a disturbing sequence of events, including Watson allegedly fleeing after dropping her off at the hospital and police later finding blood and her belongings at a property in Norwood, St. James.
Samnath’s family has also launched a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs and said they plan to use remaining funds to support domestic violence organizations in her name. "Melissa was a strong, loving, and unforgettable woman whose warmth touched everyone around her," read part of the fundraiser. "She loved traveling, exploring new places, and spending time with the people she cared for most."
For Samnath’s family, the pain is still fresh. Her niece told reporters that Melissa was “one of the most loving persons ever,” while her sister said she was her “best friend.” Those words turn the story from a breaking-news headline into something much harder to sit with: a woman who left home to celebrate life and instead met her death.
