The BET Hip Hop Awards is a celebration of the most revolutionary genre of all time, as well as a chance for current stars to show off their chops.
This year’s cyphers will be jammed-packed. With DJ HED helming the ones and twos, there will be a “Lyricism Cypher”, made up of Tierra Whack, Smino and D Smoke, a “Digital Cypher” comprised of Kidd Ken, Lakeyah and Toosii Symba and a “Hot Now Cypher” with Erica Banks, Fivio Foreign, Sleepy Hallow and Rico Nasty.
On the heels of releasing her album, Nightmare Vacation, Rico Nasty has been featured on and killed so many songs this year, you’d have to be asleep to not think she wasn’t still hot at the moment.
With the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards and its cyphers airing Oct. 5, here’s a look at some of Rico’s best bars over the past year
Coming off her debut studio album, Nightmare Vacation, is the cut punk rap gem “STFU”. In the video, Rico goes full Fight Club in what is a high-energy, pulsating listen.
Gettin' cheese like Swiss
Two strands on me, but it ain't no twist
Don't get what I want, then I'm throwin' a fit
Pop out to the club, it's designer, my fit
They thinkin' I'm done, but I'm at it again
Blue bands on me but I ain't no Crip
Pull up to the party and make a ho dip
You all on my a**, you got sh** on your lip (Ew, shut up)
Released in September, after previewing the track during her set at last month’s Lollapalooza, “Buss” is a hard-hitting loosey from Ms. Nasty with braggadocious rhymes.
This Sugar Trap s***, I invented it
You lil’ b**** really just rented it
If you bite me, you owe me percentages
“Magic,” is another single by Rico Nasty that dropped this year that was set to appear on her upcoming mixtape Rx. Alongside Vincent van den Ende, Ramon Ginton, Amit Nagra, and Romano Wijnstein as co-writers, the track features summer-time vibe production
In a statement to Pitchfork, Rico said she wanted the song “to bring out another side of you and almost feel like you’re being taken over by magic.
I be busy, but I like to spend my time with you (Oh yeah)
Life is what you make it, I wanna spend mine with you (Oh yeah)
Stamped passports, foreign dashboards
Buy you gifts that you ain't asked for, that's why you get more (Uh-oh)
And you can’t forget her surprise collaboration with Boston’s upcoming rapper Token on the single “High Heels”.
Rico Nasty makes her presence known almost immediately over the track, bouncing over the bass-heavy instrumental and delivering bars like people wouldn't expect.
Started off bubble-gum, now I make their faces numb (No!)
Started off looking down now I’m the one they’re looking up
I chase the money, face it, these bitches really some bums
Kidd Kenn’s new EP, PROBLEM CHILD, which was released this year, 18-year-old critically acclaimed Chicago hip hop sensation’s newest single, “Moves” featured Nasty.
Rico I got the vibes when I put that shit on B****
I'm a mood (Bitch, I'm a mood)
They be watching what I do (Huh)
Could never be one of you (You)
