Allegations Of ‘Racist Fan Behavior’ Towards Angel Reese Could Not Be Substantiated

The WNBA conducted an investigation into “racist fan behavior” during a recent game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever.

On Tuesday, May 27, the WNBA announced that allegations of “racist fan behavior” directed towards  Chicago Sky star Angel Reese earlier this month could not be substantiated.

The alleged incident took place during a recent game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis.

Following the game, the WNBA launched an investigation of “hateful fan comments.”

In a statement, the WNBA released the findings of its investigation.

“We have investigated the report of racist fan behavior in the vicinity of the court during the May 17, 2025, Chicago Sky at Indiana Fever game,” the statement read. “Based on information gathered to date, including from relevant fans, team, and arena staff, as well as audio and video review of the game, we have not substantiated it."

“The WNBA is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone and will continue to be vigilant in enforcing our fan code of conduct.”

Following the WNBA’s announcement, Chicago Sky CEO and President Adam Fox thanked the Fever for taking the matter seriously.

“We appreciate the quick action by the league and the Indiana Fever to take this matter seriously and to investigate,” Fox said. “This process demonstrates the league’s strong stance on stopping hate at all WNBA games and events, and we will continue to support those efforts.”

When asked about the incident, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark said she did not hear any racist comments at the arena, reported CBS Sports.

"It's super loud in here, and though I didn't hear anything, I think that's why they're doing the investigation," Clark said earlier this month. "That's why they're looking into it. That doesn't mean nothing happened, so I'll just trust the league's investigation, and I'm sure they'll do the right thing."

While she did not disclose the exact comments that she heard, Reese thanked the league and her team for their continued support.

"Obviously, there's no place in this league for that," Reese said at that time. "I think the WNBA and our team and our organization has done a great job supporting me. ... Going through this whole process, if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone."
