Nicki Minaj has pulled out her costumes once again to pose for Teen Vogue's June/July issue. The rapper/American Idol judge sports a light blue tutu, an embellished Vivienne Westwood corset and a lace Chris Benz top on the cover, which embraces Minaj's self-described style: "euphoric, girl and powerful."
In her interview, Minaj addresses bullying and having to be the new kid in school many times over due to relocations. She recalls being nervous each time and being teased by other girls in high school because she had too much confidence.
"I encountered jealous girls a lot — it wasn't like I had nice clothes, so they couldn't be envious of that, but they were like, 'You shouldn't be that confident,'" Minaj said. "What it came down to is that the bullies wanted me to bow down to them. And I just wouldn't."
That refusal to just bend over backwards for people is a trait the rapper carries to this day.
"People treat this business like it's high school. It can absolutely feel like one big popularity contest, and you know what? I can't be bothered," she said. "I can't allow myself to play ridiculous games with grown adults in the industry. I can't be nice to someone just because they're hot right now. I can't do it."
Who knows? Maybe if she forced herself to play nice, she and fellow Idol judge Mariah Carey would get along better. Not that she cares about any haters. Minaj told Teen Vogue that she ignores the negative comments and advised teens to delete their social media if it's creating too much drama.
"I used to read the bad things people said about me. Then I asked myself, 'Why am I reading that when I have millions of people saying great things?' You cannot give negativity power," she said. "I tell teens, 'If you're having a problem, there's nothing wrong with deleting your social media. If people keep taunting you and you keep reading it, it's poison.'"
