Elon Musk Claims He ‘Deleted’ IRS Tax Filing Service

The Tesla CEO reposted a tweet saying that the service was a “far left government wide computer office" that was “built by Elizabeth Warren.”

Elon Musk has threatened to have “deleted” the government agency behind the IRS Direct File program, but the free filing option remains available to taxpayers.

On Monday, February 3, the Tesla CEO and X owner went on the social media to announce the termination of the IRS’ 18F employees, insinuating that he'd get rid of the tax filing program. Musk reposted a message about 18F developing the Direct File tax program, which the poster accused of being a “far left government wide computer office” that was the agency “that built Elizabeth Warren's “Direct File” tax program.”

“That group has been deleted,” Musk boldly claimed.

The website continues to be active, but Musk’s message shocked those preparing for tax season, as he’s previously slammed tax regulations as “torturing the American people.”

According to the U.S. Department of Treasury, Direct File, accessible in English and Spanish, “is a historic new IRS service that allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and file their tax return online, for free, including access to help from dedicated IRS Direct File customer support representatives.”

In claiming that he aims to reduce wasteful government spending, Musk is leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) program with plans to increase operational effectiveness and aggressively cut down on ‘unnecessary’ expenses.
