Chrisette Michele Is Sorry For Trump Fiasco, Says Backlash 'Stress' Caused Her Miscarriage

"I regret everything that happened."

Chrisette Michele became the target of digital criticism at the top of 2017 when it was announced that she would perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Although at the time the singer defended her actions by suggesting her performance would be an olive branch for change, she has since changed her tune. During her recent visit on The Breakfast Club on Nov. 2, Michele stated that she deeply regretted her performance and revealed the devastating toll the backlash took on her health.

“I regret everything that happened. I think it was a bad choice,” Chrisette told The Breakfast Club hosts of her decision. “A lot of times when you have a message of hope, a lot of times when you have a message of healing, you think — you know, maybe it’s a self-righteous thing, maybe it’s a mistake to feel that way — but you think, ‘Man, if I just tell people everything is gonna be OK, they’ll hear me.’”

While Chrisette admitted she didn’t agree with Trump as president, she thought she could at least get one message through to him. “I knew that he wasn’t a good choice for the presidency. That was something we all knew together,” she added. “But there’s always gotta be some sense of hope. Again, that stage, that message on that stage was the wrong time and the wrong place. And I apologize deeply for the people that I hurt.”

She now understands the magnitude of her choices, but revealed the backlash had a far more tremendous impact on her than anyone could imagine. Prior to her interview, the songstress unveiled on Instagram that she had experienced a miscarriage. She posted a lengthy message chronicling her journey along with a photo of a woman’s blood clots. The photo, which has now been deleted from her account, stirred up more controversy with critics claiming that the move was ill-timed and possibly fake.

“I had a lot of things happen over the last few months,” she explained when asked about why she chose to inform people of her struggles on social media. “I just wanted people to know because I felt like people wanted to know if I was affected. They wanted to know what I was experiencing because it was so many words that people had and I felt like maybe they don’t know that I hear them. So instead of coming out with a song right away or an album right away, I wanted to say, you know, it’s been tough. These are the things that I’ve been going through. And the next art you hear from me will be about that.”

And when asked whether she thinks the Trump fiasco had a direct effect on her health, the singer said yes. “The stress of Trump becoming the president, me becoming so associated with someone I don’t support, and then the stress of the hatred online and then the stress of me wondering if I ever wanted to sing again, I think that had a lot to do with the stress on my body,” she agreed.

If she could do it all over again, she would undoubtedly take some different steps. But for right now, Chrisette isn’t worried about making people like her or agree with everything she does. “If you want to f**k with me after this, do. If you don’t want to f**k with me after this, don’t,” Michele said.
