Exclusive: Dwyane Wade Shares His Worst Fashion Mistake

And discusses the hardships of breaking into fashion.

Dwyane Wade is not only a beast on the court, as one of most well-known players in the NBA, but the Chicago Bulls shooting guard is also an absolute savage when it comes to personal style. Additionally, Since DW is married to one of the most stylish women in Hollywood, Gabrielle Union, the two are a veritable fashion dream team.

When he is not leading the Bulls to countless victories, Dwyane Wade is busy working on building a fashion empire. BET: When it comes to fashion, what are your go-to pieces when you decide to step out off the court?

Dwyane Wade: Tonight I wore a black jacket. You can never go wrong with a black sportscoat. You can never go wrong with a nice white shirt on underneath. Now you can add whatever color you want, but you can never go wrong with black and white. Its always a go-to for me, but always a black sportscoat with a white, crisp shirt. I can never go wrong with that.

BET: When shopping on your own, putting together your looks, what’s your process?

DW: I mean, if you're going through a store, you just get whatever speaks to you. That’s how I do it. When shopping, I check out whatever speaks to me. It may not look the way I think it will, but if it speaks to me, even if it's something cool or something ain't cool, whatever the case may be. If it speaks to me, I am going to try it and go from there.

BET: I must admit you have consistent great taste when it comes to personal style. But are there any fashion choices that you regret or just felt were style disasters?

DW: I’m sure there are a lot of options!

BET: What comes to your mind first?

DW: When me and my stylist started working together in Miami, she had me wear this, like, trench pony coat. [laughs] Now I look back, I am like, that wasn’t a good look and it was in Miami. What the heck I am doing in a pony trench Miami? I am sure if I go through, like, a list of certain things, I will be like, “Yeah, I shouldn’t have done that!”

BET: Being a NBA player and actually breaking into the fashion world, especially with your collaborations with luxury designers like Dsquared2 — which we love, by the way — as well as working with Amazon Fashion, was it hard to transition between the two industries of NBA and fashion?

DW: Thank you. Thank you! Yeah, I am still transitioning. I look at it as I am still learning. It is [learning] because you come in as an athlete and are looked at as an athlete. So you kinda have to prove yourself all over. You know, no matter how big you [are] or whatever name you come in with, you still have to prove yourself in this space. It definitely wasn’t easy and I am still trying to prove myself, but it's been cool to kinda get a seat at the table and get an opportunity. So I am trying to take advantage of it.
