Ingraham first used the phrase when referring to James after he criticized former president Donald Trump in 2018. “The climate is hot," James said at the time. "The number-one job in America, the appointed person is someone who doesn’t understand the people. And really don’t give a (expletive) about the people."
Ingraham said at the time that James’ comments were “barely intelligible” in her defense of Trump, she called the 4-time NBA champion someone “who gets paid $100 million dollars a year to bounce a ball.” She then said that James needs to “keep the political commentary” to himself and “shut up and dribble.”
James shared Ingraham’s comments to his 51 million Twitter followers writing, “If you still haven’t figured out why the protesting is going on. Why we’re acting as we are is because we are simply F-N tired of this treatment right here! Can we break it down for you any simpler than this right here????. And to my people don’t worry I won’t stop until I see.”
Despite her comments, James noted that he would continue to use his platform to address societal needs. “I will not just shut up and dribble,” James said in 2018, per the Associated Press. “I get to sit up here and talk about what’s really important.”
He added, “We will definitely not shut up and dribble,” James said. “I will definitely not do that. I mean too much to society. I mean too much to the youth. I mean too much to so many kids that feel like they don’t have a way out and they need someone to help lead them out of the situation they’re in.”
