Lizzo Recalls Her Little Mermaid Audition To Play Ursula

“My audition was good. You can ask Disney,” the Grammy-winning artist recalls.

Lizzo might not be playing the role of Ursula in the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, but she is making it clear to her fans that not only was she gunning for the role, she was ready to give it her all under the sea.

Ultimately the part of villain went to actress Melissa McCarthy but the Grammy Award-winning singer took a moment to speak with Variety to share her experience auditioning for the character.

"Everyone knows I auditioned for Ursula in The Little Mermaid, and I didn't get it. But you know, I'm fine as h***. That has nothing to do with Ursula, but I was down to make Ursula a thot, shaking a**," she said.

In case you missed it, Lizzo took to Twitter back in 2018 dressed as the popular Disney character herself in a viral video with the hopes that she would catch the attention of The Little Mermaid filmmakers.

“I’M URSULA. PERIOD,” she captioned her post.

Despite not getting the part, Lizzo tells Variety that she is still proud of her more formal audition.

“My audition wasn't terrible. Sometimes I like to make jokes,” she added. “My audition was good. You can ask Disney. I don't want to talk too much about it. The singing was great. I'll just say that.”

The Rob Marshall-directed movie wrapped filming in July 2021 and also stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King, who will play Prince Eric, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.

The Little Mermaid heads to theaters on May 26, 2023.
