SMH: Mya Reveals What Her Managers Asked Her To Do For Publicity Stunts...

Holly-weird.

R&B songstress Mya has two decades worth of music industry experience under her belt and a wide range of industry mates, friends, and relationships that she’s picked up along the way.

That does not, however, include intimate relationships, which she says her former managers tried to convince her to gravitate toward in order to stay in the Hollywood spotlight.

The “Case of the Ex” singer sat down with the hosts of Hot 97 to reveal that there’s been times where members of her management suggested she date and link herself to certain artists for publicity. Mya refused these suggestions, of course, due to her belief in the sacredness of actual love and relationships.

"I've had two boyfriends in the industry," she said. "Like, relationships. But I never say names because I respect my relationships and what we've gone through.”

Mya said that she doesn’t mind sharing the experiences of those former relationships in art form via her music, but she wouldn’t compromise her or her former significant other’s privacy.

“People have linked me to a lot of people,” she said, while responding to Ebro Darden that she’d never dated Sisqó nor Jadakiss, artists she was formerly rumored to be dating. “But people also project what they want to see for you.”

After her father managed her, Mya went on to work with industry managers throughout her career. But she did away with anyone who suggested she take illegitimate means to success.

“My intention has always been love and connection with a person beyond anything else,” she informed. “I’ve been so private because I didn’t want it to make or break me or to be a public stunt. I’ve really fired a lot of managers that had that mindset or publicists that had that mindset of, ‘Oh, you need to go on a date with this person because it’s going to help album sales.’ No thank-you. That’s not my flow. I don’t like it. I understand it from that perspective.”

Not to mention, she’s “single,” “focused,” and “celibate,” as she put it, so a faux relationship doesn’t fit in her schedule, anyway.

Shout-out to Mya for staying true after all of these years.
