BET Awards 2022: 5 Unforgettable Trailblazing Women to Receive the ‘BET HER Award’

These five lovely ladies made us feel seen, heard, and empowered.

The “BET HER Award” honors artists and their respective motivational and empowering songs centered around women. In the past, some of the most talented and chart-topping singers and songwriters have earned the prestigious recognition, including Solange for her mid-tempo soul ballad “Cranes in the Sky” and Mary J. Blige for her 2017 single “Strength of a Woman.”

Ahead of this year’s BET Awards 2022, hosted by actress Taraji P.Henson on Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, check out five of the most memorable female recipients of the “BET HER Award.”

  • H.E.R. — “Hard Place”

    In 2019, H.E.R. was honored with the “BET HER Award” for her single “Hard Place” from her fifth EP, I Used to Know Her: Part 2. Produced by the legendary Rodney Jerkins, the track finds the singer-songwriter struggling between an unhealthy relationship and her well-being, knowing that only love will win.

    She initially performed the song at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. That same record earned a nomination for “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” a year later. The singer-songwriter discusses former love and soul searching over guitar-tinged riff plays.

  • SZA — “Good Days”

    SZA’s 2020 angelic hit single “Good Days”  earned her several prominent recognitions, including a nomination for “Best R&B Song” at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards and the “BET HER Award” honors at the BET Awards 2021.

  • Mary J. Blige — “Strength of a Woman”

    At the BET Awards 2018, the Queen of Hip Hop Soul was honored with the “BET HER Award” for her thirteenth studio album, Strength of a Woman. The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart promoting a Strength of a Woman tour, featuring several talented artists, including Lalah Hathaway, LeToya Luckett, Joe, and Stokley Williams, at select venues.

  • Solange — “Cranes in the Sky”

    Solange was given the “BET HER Award” at the BET Awards 2017 for her mid-tempo 2016 soul ballad titled “Cranes in the Sky” from her third studio album, A Seat at the Table; the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter sings about a scenario all but too familiar—numerous failed attempts to distract herself from a longstanding pain. The single her the Houston native the Grammy for Best R&B Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

  • Tamar Braxton — “Love and War”

    Singer and songwriter Tamar Braxton talks about the ups and downs of relationships and marriages in this 2012 R&B ballad, “Love and War,” off her second studio album, Love and War. The track earned her two the star two Grammy nominations at the 56th annual event and the win for the “BET HER Award” at the 2013 ceremony.
