Damon Dash Opens Up About Aaliyah's Untimely Death

"There's no chance that, if I was there, we would've been on that plane. And so, it would've never happened that way."

R&B princess Aaliyah died tragically almost 15 years ago, but the pain still affects those who were closest to her, including her then-boyfriend, former Roc-a-Fella co-CEO Damon Dash. Dash spoke with the ladies of The Real and reflected on the events leading to Aaliyah's unfortunate death. Dash mentioned that had he been there, things would've been different.

The Real co-host Jeannie Mai referenced Dash's comments on Family Therapy With Dr. Jenn about him saying that the death of his mother and Aaliyah turned him into a monster. Mai asked Dash if there was a chance that he could've been on the plane at the time of her death. "There's no chance that if I was there, we would've been on that plane and so, it would've never happened that way. I broke out to go to New York and she told me she was going to the Bahamas and I was against it, like, 'Yo, don't go.' Then, down to the last — we had the Blackberry — down to the last Blackberry that we had before she went there, she was like, 'Yo, I don't like that plane.' I was like, 'Don't get on it,' and she was just like, 'You know I gotta do it.' You know, it was a complicated situation, but she had to go do that video. So, if I was there, I would've made sure that that jet that was supposed to be for her, the G4, she would've been on that. I wouldn't have got on that plane."

At the time, Dash was a single dad, caring for his son while battling court issues. Aaliyah went to the Bahamas to shoot the video for her single, "Rock the Boat." She and her team left the island a day early and in doing so, they took a smaller plane than the one originally intended, which crashed shortly after takeoff.
