Along with this annual march, a healing ceremony and rally will be included, making it a day-long event.

MS Governor Hosts Katrina Memorial
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour hosts a joint event, commemorating the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and supporting the recovery of the MS Gulf coast following this year’s oil spill.
Date: Sunday, August 29, 2010 from 3-5 pm
Place: 15th St. in downtown Gulfport, between City Hall and the First United Methodist Church
Hope Community Development Agency’s “Celebration of Healing”
Hope CDA has gathered businessmen and community leaders together for this week-long series of events across the MS Gulf coast.

KaBOOM Playground Build
Come help out the community, as the KaBOOM children’s organization looks to assemble a Mardi Gras-themed playground for the young people of New Orleans, featuring music, festivities and a raffle.

In addition to these public 5th anniversary commemorations, there are a handful of individual events worthy of mention.
- It has been announced that President Obama will visit the New Orleans area for the anniversary. He is scheduled to speak at Xavier University, the nation’s single historically Black Catholic institution.
- World premiere of the film “New Orleans The Crescent” on August 29, 2010, examining the New Orleans Port, the largest port system in the world, before and after Hurricane Katrina. The film will be shown at the Carnegie Institute of Washington on the date of the 5th anniversary. The film is also currently available on DVD.
- A 12,000 square-foot National Katrina Museum – intended to tell the story of the thousands of families who suffered through the worst natural disaster in American history – is scheduled to open on the 5th anniversary.
