Report: Legendary New York DJ Mister Cee Dies at 57

A towering figure in hip-hop in New York City, the Brooklyn native is credited with discovering Big Daddy Kane and The Notorious B.I.G.

DJ Mister Cee, aka The Finisher, a pioneering record executive, radio personality, and stalwart in the New York City hip-hop scene, has reportedly passed away at the age of 57.

The cause of death is not known.

Born Calvin LeBrun in the Bedford–Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, Cee fell in love with hip-hop's burgeoning culture and started DJing at an early age. He went to high school with a future rap legend Big Daddy Kane. Eventually, he became Kane’s official DJ when he released his 1988 debut album, Long Live the Kane.

He also discovered The Notorious B.I.G. and served as the rapper’s DJ and an associate producer on his debut album Ready to Die.

During the 1990s, he began his long tenure as a DJ at New York’s Hot 97, where he was known for spinning the classics and breaking the music of rising artists.

Cee was also the co-host of The Beat 102.7 in Grand Theft Auto IV, along with DJ Green Lantern.

Hot 97 issued a statement about his passing:

As a family at HOT 97 and WBLS, we’re deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved Mister Cee. He wasn’t just a DJ; he was a pillar of our stations, bringing joy to countless listeners with his legendary Throwback at Noon and Friday Night Live sets.

Mr. Cee’s influence stretched far beyond the airwaves, shaping the very fabric of NYC’s DJ culture. Our hearts are heavy as we send our love and condolences to his family and the fans whose lives he touched through his music.

Many took to social media to share their condolences and tributes to Cee when news of his passing became public.

“My heart is broken! All that knew him loved him! Take the music to heaven and put the Wallop down! Rest in Peace @djmistercee, wrote Ed Lover, who worked with Cee at Hot 97.

“Man, one of my favorite DJs is gone. The Finisher! May the great Mister Cee rest in peace,” Elliot Wilson wrote.

We extend our prayers and deepest condolences to the family and friends of DJ Mister Cee.
