The family of influencer Ashlee Jenae is speaking publicly for the first time following her sudden and still-unexplained death during a trip overseas, raising new questions about the circumstances surrounding her passing.

Jenae, whose real name was Ashly Robinson, died in early April while vacationing in Zanzibar, Tanzania, where she had been celebrating her birthday and recent engagement to fiancé Joe McCann. She was 31.

In a recent interview with CBS News, her parents described the loss as both devastating and deeply confusing, emphasizing that what they’ve been told so far does not align with who their daughter was.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” her mother said, explaining that Jenae appeared happy and excited in the days leading up to her death.

According to her parents, they last spoke with Jenae shortly after her engagement, during what was meant to be a celebratory trip. Just days later, they received a call from McCann informing them that something had happened and that she was in the hospital. However, they say details were limited—and troubling.

Her mother told CBS that McCann allegedly informed them the incident had occurred roughly 11 hours before he contacted the family.

“That was concerning,” she said, noting that the timeline and lack of immediate communication raised questions.

Authorities in Tanzania have suggested that Jenae may have died by suicide, though her family has pushed back on that narrative, saying no official cause of death has been confirmed and that they are awaiting further investigation.

“We just want answers,” her father said, adding that the family plans to travel to Tanzania to better understand what happened in their daughter’s final hours.

Reports indicate that Jenae and McCann had an argument prior to her death, and hotel staff allegedly separated the couple into different rooms. However, authorities have stated that McCann is not currently facing charges and has not been accused of wrongdoing.

The case has since sparked widespread attention online, with many questioning the timeline of events and calling for transparency from local officials.

Jenae, who built a following sharing lifestyle and travel content, had recently posted images celebrating her birthday and engagement—moments her family says make her sudden death even harder to process.

“She was vibrant, full of life,” her family said in a statement. “This just doesn’t add up.”
