BET Awards 2022: Lucky Daye Reminds Music Listeners R&B is Not Dead with These Soulful Records
Religious restrictions prevented Los Angeles-based singer Lucky Daye from listening to secular music growing up in his hometown of New Orleans. However, after he and his mother left their organization, the songwriter soon discovered the world of classic r&b and ultimately found inspiration in legends such as Stevie Wonder and Rick James. After moving to Atlanta, GA, the rising star established himself as a songwriter and started singing as background for major artists. He’s co-written for acts such as Ella Mai, Trey Songz, and Mary J. Blige.
His breakout hit “Roll Some Mo” reestablished the star as a singer, and his debut studio album Painted earned him the respect of fans and peers. His contributions to the industry have already earned him six Grammy nominations, one of which he won for “Best Progressive R&B Album” for his 2022 EP Table for Two. While many critics on social media have debated whether the R&B genre is still alive, these five Lucky Daye songs beg to differ.
“Over”
In this uptempo ballad, Lucky sings about a toxic relationship he keeps getting pulled into even when he tries to leave. The song samples Musiq Soulchild‘s “Halfcrazy.” The r&b crooner called on the model and social media influencer Jordyn Woods to play the lead actress in the music video.
“Roll Some Mo”
As the lead single from his debut studio album Painted, “Roll Some Mo” earned the songwriter several nominations at the 62nd Grammy Awards, including ”Best R&B Song” and “Best R&B Performance.”
“Love You Too Much”
You’ll be lucky to get a song longer than 3 minutes in today’s music industry. However, Lucky appears to be bringing back the tradition of longer pieces which could be seen in his nearly 8-minute-long single “Love You Too Much” off his debut album, Painted. In it, Lucky sings about the pain felt loving someone and not seeing the same emotions reciprocated.

“How Much Can A Heart Take” feat. Yebba
Off his February 2021 EP Table for Two, Yebba joins Lucky on this beautiful track about heartbreak. Yebba’s buttery-smooth vocals and Lucky’s golden voice, which commands attention, are a match made in musical heaven as the two sing about being toxic traits and poor communication.
“On Read” with Tiana Major9
Lucky called on rising London singer Tiana Major9 which found the two dealing with the anxieties of an unanswered text to a love interest. Tiana is most famous for her collaboration with EarthGang titled “Collide,” which also appeared on Queen & Slim: The Soundtrack.
