Questlove Reveals a Posthumous D’Angelo Project Is Dropping Soon
Questlove says a new D’Angelo project is coming soon. He revealed the news while talking with The “National News Desk” at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The Roots drummer and filmmaker was a part of the original Soulquarians with D’Angelo. The two made music that helped shape a whole generation of soul lovers.
D’Angelo passed away in October at 51 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The singer’s impact runs deep in neo-soul and R&B. “Voodoo” became the blueprint for both genres, and “Black Messiah” showed how powerful D’Angelo’s voice still was when it dropped in 2014. “Black Messiah would go on to win a Grammy for Best R&B Album.
Questlove described the new project as “the sound of yesterday, but for the future,” which fits everything D’Angelo stood for. He made music that felt familiar, yet defined where the culture was moving. The Soulquarians collective included other groundbreaking neo-soul artists, including Erykah Badu, Common, and Mos Def. That movement changed how people viewed live musicianship and soul in the late 90s and early 2000s.
In a piece for Rolling Stone, Questlove reflected on their friendship and shared how they first met when D was introduced simply as “Mike.” He also spoke on their last rehearsal before the 2025 Roots Picnic, where D’Angelo was supposed to perform before Maxwell stepped in.
Questlove didn’t share details on when the project drops, but hearing him talk about it makes it clear this one’s special. Fans will get a chance to listen to D’Angelo’s voice again—something that’s always felt like a rare experience, so let’s stay tuned for the official release date in the meantime.
