'Family Matters' Star Bryton James Working to Get Animated Reboot Off the Ground
Fans of the beloved sitcom “Family Matters" may soon be in for a treat, as the series is reportedly eyeing a return in animated form.
Former child star Bryton James, who played Richie Crawford for eight seasons, revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he’s been toying with the idea of “taking the show and turning it into an animated series.” His vision includes a unique twist by “taking the old episodes, modernizing them, and kind of starting from scratch for the new generation.”
James already has the ball rolling, telling the outlet he’s “got pretty far along” with the animated series idea. He shared that he found a production company “in line to finance,” and brought “everybody on board,” including Jaleel White, who played Urkel.
“It's sitting in Warner Bros.' hands right now,” he told the outlet.
“That plan is still kind of floating around out there, and I'm still trying to pursue it."
EW shared, “A source familiar with Warner Bros. Animation tells EW that they are aware of James’ interest in doing a reboot, but the project has not moved beyond that.”
White recently shared he’s open to a reboot after shooting the idea down originally, but it would be based on his real life, BET reported.
“I thought the show should be about a kid, period, who goes on to a failing sitcom in the ’90s and upsets the apple cart but ends up saving the day,” he began to tell David Duchovny on his podcast, “Fail Better.”
“The show should really be about this kid's normal life behind-the-scenes, going to public school, because I went to public school the entire time I was on that show, and his parents, who know nothing about the business at all.”
